Lanyards on the Job Site

All over the globe individuals are using and wearing lanyards while they are working. They are being used in many places to increase the safety of the wearer and those around them.

Any person who is working on a construction site in virtually any capacity is required by law to wear a hard hat. People are learning that this safety measure does however present a few dangers. If a person is injured while wearing a hard hat, there is the possibility of the hat falling and causing further injury. To prevent this from occurring many workers have taken to wearing a retracting lanyard. They attach one end of the lanyard to their hat and the other end to their clothing. The benefit of the retractable reel is that the wearer can remove their hat and drape it over their shoulder while they are taking a break.

Companies often attach lanyards to a dead man’s switch. One end of the lanyard is attached to the operator and the other is affixed to the “kill switch”. If something happens to the operator the machine will be instantly shut down. If the operator falls, has a health related problem or merely moves away from the machine the lanyard will be pulled, and the kill switch will be automatically activated.

Lanyards are also being used to ensure that individuals who are working on scaffolds and in other high places are protected. The worker attaches one end of the lanyard to their safety harness and the other end to the nearest stable fixture. If a person has to move on open high beams, they often use a two lanyard method. They can move safely by attaching one lanyard and then moving out the beam or across the scaffolding. Once there, they can attach the second lanyard. The first one is then released. Using this method an individual can move safely almost anywhere on the site.

This two double ended lanyards moving technique is employed by individuals in all kinds of construction and maintenance jobs. Everyone from the people required to install roof trusses to the people clearing the windows of a sky scraper use this safety procedure.

A common site is to see an individual wearing an ID card on a lanyard. This is worn for a number of different reasons. People, who do work on location, may need the ID as proof of their employment. The ID may be needed to allow the person into restricted areas, or as a way of identifying people who are on any kind of service call. The ID is also used as a way of indicating a person’s position in places like hospitals and stores. Hospital employees are not only given an ID lanyard, but one which has a color code. Nurses and doctors would be required to wear one color, whereas technicians would wear another. This simple system identifies caregivers to both patients and other employees of the hospital.

Lanyards can be worn on various locations to ensure the safety of workers and it can be used as means of identifying employees.
